Our No-Prep Bed Bug Solution

The issue is that for years the industry has asked tenants to perform these steps, when in reality, with most infestations the prep work may be making the job more difficult by spreading the bed bugs.

A better approach we believe is to prep as needed. For the initial inspection, we prefer to have the tenant only clean their apartment of messes. Pick up their clutter and sweep or vacuum the floors.

Have them leave the bed as is. (If they strip the bed, where are the sheets going? In the hall or closet? Now where are the bed bugs?) On the day that we are performing the Bed Bug treatment, we ask them to launder the bed linens and they can be replaced after the re-entry time has elapsed. If we find evidence around the closet, then we might ask them to empty it for the treatment. By having the tenants leave the items where they are, we now can inspect them and control the infestation.

We don't ask the tenant to clean out from under the bed before we inspect the home. (Where did they put those items, did they have bedbugs on them? Where are they now?) In addition to controlling the infestation, we are not asking tenants to turn their lives upside down by emptying the closets and dressers when in the end it may not even be necessary.

All we recommend is to clean their home and we'll ask them to complete preps if we see evidence that it would be required.

As an infestation grows the bugs will also spread to surrounding apartments. Research suggests that bedbugs will be found in an apartment surrounding a reported investigation about 25% of the time. The frequency though can change by the environment and it has been found that bedbugs can be found in a surrounding apartment in high-rise senior living situations upwards of 80% of the time. If a surrounding apartment to the apartment we are treating has a bedbug infestation, and it is not addressed, it may be impossible to solve the infestation you are treating. Because of this, surrounding unit inspections should be required on all jobs in multifamily housing settings.
